from JENIN to GAZA
A short visit to a long conflict
In April 2002, the Israeli Defence Forces launched Operation Defensive
Shield and began an assault on Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.
Jenin quickly became the centre of world attention as the Israeli
Government refused access to journalists and UN officials. After weeks of
bombardment, the Israelis were accused of the deliberate massacre of Palestinians.
Exactly what happened in Jenin is still the subject of fierce argument.
Silvio Cerulli was one of the first journalists to be smuggled into Jenin two
weeks after the assault began. He was moved to write down what he saw and to try
to make sense of the killing and devastation.
This book provides a terrifying glimpse of an important episode in the
deteriorating Middle East conflict. As well as Cerulli's sensitive observation and
analysis, the book includes a number of unique photographs. Proceeds from the
book will be donated to help the children from the primary school in Aida refugee
camp just outside Bethlehem. Children from the school drew the pictures
shown on the cover.
Silvio Cerulli is the Palestine and Ireland correspondent for the national daily
newspaper Liberazione. His first book, Irlanda del Nord:
Una lunga strada tra pace e guerra is regarded as the best Italian published
book on the Irish question.
